CHAPTER 5

IXI

I close my eyes and ignore the way that Shallon watches me.

Even still, my heartstrings flutter the way they always did around her, even if there are fewer of them left than there were before.

Memories pulled them taught and changed the tuning. And I can’t lock them away anymore.

But I remember her sweet spots too, and I’m not about to ignore them. Trailing my hands up the seams of her larger tentacles, where her suckers meet the pebbled texture on top…. The lights in her eyes sparkle brighter, flaring in a way I know used to make her head spin.

Like the stars, they’re beautiful, but never safe.

She’d wrapped me up in herself once. Surrounded me in a way I didn’t know was possible and slipped through dimensions and space with me inside of her.

We’d lain in the Allenian fields and she taught me the Shadow words for the constellations we both looked up at from our respective worlds.

I’d told her I preferred the constellations I found in her eyes and we’d both giggled so hard at that, we’d almost gotten caught by other Shadows out for a night walk. She’d wrapped me up tight again and returned me to this safe little haven we’d made for ourselves.

I lift myself off of her, peeling her suckers from my breast, my skin flickering at the pain, and my pussy tightens at the sight of the marks left behind.

I’ll wear those marks for days, and the ones on my legs as she unravels herself from me.

“I’ve forgotten what you taste like.” Moving back, I point to the post and its hidden dial. “Turn the field back up.”

She does, stretching to reach it, and as she does, her tentacles disappear, replaced with—

“Absolutely not.”

She flinches and turns back to me, eyes wide, brows high.

“Wearing my face for a while is fine, but I want as much of you to be you as possible.” My knees hit the mattress when the dial twists and I swat the ankle beside me. “Take this off.”

She looks at me ruefully as the two legs she’d form expand and break apart again, returning to that skirt-like mass of tentacles. Returning to the normal bright yellow of her skin.

I look up at my face and raise a brow. “I don’t think you need to wear that anymore, either.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’ve wanted to see your face for years, Shal.” We’d long ago determined that keeping any photo of the other would be too dangerous. “I’ve waited this long, only so that I’d be able to kiss you.”

Shallon nods and then shifts, almost as if the transition is uncomfortable, but my face fades from hers, and with it all the blue of my skin.

In their natural state, Shadows are all tentacles and skin in shades of the sunset, their bodies dotted shimmering translucence. Her skin glitters as though it’s been speckled with gold.

I can see her hearts beating through the skin where her chest would be if she was Icarian. Two blue organs that look like they belong in my body, not beneath the sunny skin of hers.
